SAP's Investment in AI for HR: Joule, AI Agents and AI in SuccessFactors

SAP is building AI directly into business applications such as SuccessFactors. Where SAP Business AI, the Joule assistant and AI agents are heading, and how HR can prepare.

SAP has made AI central to its product strategy, grouping the AI built into its business applications under the name SAP Business AI. For companies on SAP SuccessFactors, this means AI will appear step by step inside everyday HR processes, without a separate tool to build.

Below are the main directions SAP has announced publicly. Features, licensing and release timing change quickly, so check SAP’s official materials for the latest.

Direction 1: AI embedded in processes

SAP’s approach is to embed AI in existing applications so people use it in the screens they already know. In SuccessFactors, common AI-assisted features include:

  • help writing job descriptions and interview questions
  • help writing goals and performance feedback
  • learning content and internal opportunities recommended from an employee’s skills and career interests
  • skills inferred from employee data to support skills inventories

These features use the employee data already in SuccessFactors and inherit existing role permissions.

Direction 2: the Joule generative AI assistant

Joule is SAP’s generative AI assistant across its cloud applications. Employees and managers can ask questions or get work done in natural language, such as looking up information, finding tasks to act on or starting common HR requests.

SAP describes Joule in three layers: the assistant is the conversational entry point, an agent completes part of a process, and a skill is a single, well-defined action. The SAP SuccessFactors overview explains this in its Joule section.

Direction 3: AI agents

SAP’s recent focus is AI agents: AI that understands a goal, plans the steps and completes multi-step work across systems. In HR, imaginable uses include preparing performance conversation material, handling the groundwork for employee changes, or helping payroll teams check anomalies. These capabilities are evolving fast, so clear permissions and human sign-off points matter even more.

Direction 4: the data foundation

AI is only as good as its data. SAP is also strengthening its data platform so HR, finance and operational data can be used with consistent meaning. For companies, the quality of HR master, position and organisation data directly limits how much value the AI features deliver.

What HR can do now

  1. Clean up core data: make sure core HR data such as Employee Central is complete and consistently defined.
  2. Map use cases: list the most time-consuming, repetitive HR tasks and judge which suit AI first. See The First Step to AI in Your HRIS.
  3. Set permissions and governance: decide which AI outputs need human review and keep records.
  4. Understand licensing: some SAP AI capabilities may need additional licences, so confirm with SAP or your implementation partner first.
  5. Pilot small: try one process, measure results, then scale.
